We’re looking for Resident Entrepreneurs

Tribfire pitching at Demo Day, our startup graduation pitch night

Help our founders level-up at Sydney University

Every year INCUBATE recruits some of its top mentors to become a Resident Entrepreneur (or Entrepreneur in Residence) working alongside and helping our startups in our accelerator and pre-accelerator programs.

For 2019 we’re opening this callout up to the wider community. Apply here if this interests you!

What does being a Resident Entrepreneur entail?

You get to work alongside our startup founders in the accelerator on a weekly basis and across other programs. Depending on your level of involvement that means sitting in our weekly progress meetings, helping the teams level up through one-on-one coaching and support, hosting workshops and giving talks on your speciality area.

What do our best Resident Entrepreneurs (REs) do?

  • Talk from personal experience
  • Help solve problems
  • Get them focussed on the right things for their stage of business
  • Prevent our startups from crashing unnecessarily

“EiR at Incubate is a fantastic job, its like squeezing 5 years of business life into 1. The startups are looking to learn off you but the truth is you end up learning as much off them. Its helped me in my career, given me access to the research and student community which is fantastic for deal flow and talent for our companies.”

— Mike Nicholls, former Resident Entrepreneur and now Parter at Main Sequence Ventures

Is this a paid role?

Yes. Our RE’s are paid contractors.

What are we looking for in a Resident Entrepreneur?

We’re looking for an entrepreneur or founder with extensive startup experience either in their current role or previous role. REs suit someone that is typically in-between ventures and is flexible with their time and wants to give back.

Typically you’ll have:

  • 4+ years of startup experience either as a co-founder or on the core team
  • Have had some role in helping build and scale; e.g. in engineering, product, operations or marketing and sales
  • We’re also very interested in founders with the full range of startup experience: founded, built, scaled and exited a business (rare we know!)

For 2019 we’re also looking for Resident Entrepreneurs that are specialists in:

  • Startup generalist; you’ve done it all at some stage and just want to give back
  • Scaling software or hardware businesses, both in terms of product development and /or operations
  • Have experience in hardware startups, manufacturing and shipping products
  • Marketing and/or sales, understanding how to get the word out there on a small budget and get results
  • Consumer and FMCG startups, understanding what it takes to build a big and successful consumer product from scratch

What is the time commitment and format?

How much time you can commit depends on your schedule. We’re looking for

  • We’re open to REs all year round but in particular are looking for January 15 until end of April 2019
  • Drop-in: Anywhere from 4 hours a week to 3 days a week
  • Work out of the INCUBATE Hub: Work out of the brand new INCUBATE Hub full-time on your startup. Includes a free desk and office resources with agreed upon hours for Incubate related mentoring.

Where do you work from?

The brand new, state-of-the-art INCUBATE Hub. You’ll get a desk and access to our printing and kitchen services. We think it’s the best startup hub on any campus in Australia.

What if I’m not based in Sydney?

That’s fine! We’re open to chatting to national or international RE’s who are willing to visit Sydney.
